Previous weeks of 50KM training:

**

I wanted to start this recap by saying that I know my blog posting has become really sparse lately. My 50 km recaps and a few weekend recaps here and there! Yikes. I am going to try and change that. The hard part for me right now is I haven’t been making time for blogging and I also feel really turned off by the idea of going on my computer after a long day in the office. Tis the summer season, right? Plus 50 km training is truly more tiring and time consuming then any other training I’ve ever done. With yoga classes I’m working out for at least 10 hours a week and it’s a lot on top of work and other things. I feel tired a lot of the time and would rather zone out to the TV at night then blog or read blogs.

Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you to my readers who may not be that interested in reading about running all the time for bearing with me right now! I know weekly training recaps aren’t very interesting but they are really great for me to have and look back on my training.

Monday – REST

I actually had big plans of going to yoga last Monday night but then Eric ended up working late and I had to wait around to pick him up from work. Kind of a lame excuse but its what happened.

Tuesday – 1 hour run (4.3 miles / 6.92 km)

Normal Tuesday morning loop. Nothing too exciting to report!

Wednesday – 1 hour, 45 minute run (7 miles / 11.2 km) + 45-minute flow yoga class

On Wednesday I got up at 4:45 am so I could start running by 5:15 am and fit in an extra 45 minutes before doing my normal morning loop. Whew. I was quite sleepy the rest of the day but very happy to have the run done. At lunch I went to a flow yoga class and it was great. I love love love going to yoga at lunchtime.

Thursday – REST

A much needed rest day before three days of running in a row.

Friday – 1 hour, 20 minute run (5.5 miles / 8.85 km)

A big group of us (5 people and 4 dogs) headed out for a run early on Friday morning. Great way to kick off the weekend. I then had an extremely relaxing evening on Friday!

Saturday – 55 minute run (4.0 miles / 6.4 km) + 60-minute hot flow yoga class

A little shake out run that was really more for the dogs than for us! And Saturday afternoon I went back to hot yoga for the first time in five weeks! I honestly cannot believe its been that long since I last went to a class. The class was so amazing. Super sweaty and flowy and wonderful. My hamstrings felt it for two days afterwards.

Sunday – 3 hours, 50 minute run (16.42 miles / 26.4 km)

On Sunday my friend Carmine and I along with our dogs drove up to Sun Peaks (about 45 minutes from Kamloops) for another adventure run on cross-country trails. We ended up getting lost a few times because the trails weren’t super well marked but we got in our 4 hour run (almost). It was a pretty good run. We climbed a lot right at the beginning to get to the top of the mountain and then had a lot of rolling hills and downhill to come back down. The trails were all cross-country trails so not single track like I prefer but it was still a nice change of scenery. And we did find one super fun single track trail (that ended up getting us lost).

We were both very ready to be done by the end. I had some soggy and sore feet. Chocolate milk never tasted so good!

Totals:

Miles / Km – 37.2 miles / 59.8 km

Miles / km to date – 356.7 miles / 573.96 km

Time on my feet – 8 hours, 50 minutes

Elevation Gain – 7,290 feet

Yoga – 2 practices for a total of 1 hour, 45 minutes

Strength Training – nada :-(

Chloe’s miles / km – 37.2 miles / 59.8 km (Chloe joined me on every run last week! She’s off leash when she runs with me so it’s almost more like taking her for a long hike/walk in the trails and she is able to set her own pace.

I’m struggling a bit with the time on my feet vs. mileage thing. I mean, I’m right where I’m supposed to be in my training plan in terms of time on my feet. In fact I was 50 minutes longer last week than my training plan called for BUT I’m struggling with the ‘lowish’ mileage. I just worry that only 37 miles in a week isn’t cutting it. I will likely peak around 45-50 miles in one week and that’s only 5 – 10 more miles than I did when marathon training BUT the time on my feet is so much longer.

I wonder if this is a normal worry for a road runner turned trail runner? I used to be so concerned about time/miles/km/pace etc. and now all I really worry about is time on my feet. I don’t even wear a garmin anymore and use Runkeeper on my phone to track my runs and it stays in my spibelt the whole time so I barely look at it.

Anyways, just something I’m thinking about this week. I am really putting everything I have into this training and I just hope it’s enough.

Do you train based on miles/km or time on your feet? Any other road runners turned trail runners struggle with the same thing as me?
